11-21-09 Hatred against Muslims and Arabs answered

Hatred against Muslims and Arabs answered
By Ray Hanania —
Below are two columns you should read both. The first reflects the growing racism and hatred among a growing number of uneducated and uninformed Americans. The second represents the facts, responding to the hatred and bigotry. As an American Arab military veteran from a family of American Arab military veterans, I am proud to present this debate that is the heart of America’s misguided conscience today. Read more »

09-27-09 Arab IOC Delegates can change anti-Arab American politics

Arab World has opportunity to confront bigotry in America
By Ray Hanania –
This week, the Arab World will be participating in a vote that on its face may seem insignificant to the many problems that plague the Middle East but could begin a process of changing the United States. The vote will take place Friday in Copenhagen where the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will decide which of four cities between Madrid, Tokyo, Rio and Chicago will win the right to host the Olympics in 2016.  Compared to the votes in the United Nations where the pro-Israel bloc continues to block peace, hold back the advances of the Arab World and continues to denigrate the rights of Islamic countries, the IOC vote Friday may seem insignificant.  In fact, though, the vote could begin a process not of changing the United Nations, but rather creating an opportunity to enact change in the United States, the one nation that holds the key to the future of the Middle East. 09-26-09 Choice between bikini and berqa in Arab world is about absent freedoms

Choice between bikini and berqa is about absence of freedom in Arab World
By Ray Hanania –
As I always do around this time of year, I pushed aside the Arab-Israeli conflict for a moment to contemplate the more serious conflict between secular Muslims and Christian Arabs and the growing religious extremism in the Middle East. There are 22 Arab countries, yet only two had the courage (or pride in their women) to field entrants in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant, which was held in the Bahamas, where string bikinis replace car bombs and women are truly free. The only two Arab countries that entered contestants, again, were Egypt and Lebanon. 06-18-09 Arab Labor: Using humor in Israeli sitcom to change perceptions of Arab citizens

Arab Labor: A humorous sitcom that turns tragedy into understanding
By Ray Hanania —
The life of an Arab citizen is anything but funny. Just ask my relatives who live in several Israeli cities. Non-Jews in a Jewish world caught on the edge of the wall that separates Palestinians from Israelis. Yet, that’s exactly the premise of a sitcom that was a hit last year and is in its second season on Israeli TV called “Arab Labor.” Read more »

Shades of Gray: Ray Hanania’s World Comic Strip June 6, 2009, on Middle East (me) and also American politics (dom). President Barack Obama promised the Arab and Muslim World a new beginning, much to the chagrin of the extremists in Israel and some in his administration. 06-05-09 Analysis of President Obama’s Powerful speech

Observations on President Obama’s Speech in Cairo
By Ray Hanania –
Much was made of President Barack Obama’s speech Thursday morning (CST) to the “Muslim World.” The speech was inspiring. I listened to Obama as his speech was broadcast by an Arab television station and also to the reaction of Arabs throughout the Middle East. I subscribe to the Arab World TV systems using a neat little cable package called “Talfazat” through NeuLion Media that requires no satellite dish and uses an Internet box that connects to my TV and Internet. (Check it out at Talfazat.com. It’s under $30 a month and you can watch Al-Jazeera English while trying to learn Arabic.) Read more »

HANANIA: Media has no bounds when it comes to Muslim bashing, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, Aug. 16, 2008

Media has no bounds when it comes to Muslim Bashing
By Ray Hanania —
I had to laugh when I read Steve Huntley’s column in Friday’s Chicago Sun-Times. Steve, my former editor there, has fashioned himself as one of the leading enablers of anti-Muslim hate. He has company at the Sun-Times although the ranks of Muslim bashers have been weeded out in the newspaper’s transition from bully pulpit under the racism of Baron Conrad Black to returning to respectable journalism again as a great newspaper. Huntley is the odd-man out, though, with his narrow views on the Middle East. Read more »

HANANIA: Obama may be inspiring, but what about his people? FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, June 19, 2008

Obama may be inspiring, but what about his “people?”
By Ray Hanania –
Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama is a very inspiring person whose steady words seem to evoke confidence in his audiences. I wish he would drop that annoying Jesse Jackson-like rhyming that he does, and I am not quite comfortable about all the “people” who are around him. Imagine, for example, if John McCain’s “people” were organizing a public event and they decided that they didn’t want any Black faces in the crowd on the stage where Obama would be speaking. The outcry would be harsh. Read more »

HANANIA: “Aliens in America” feeds country’s vanilla racism, For Immediate Release, May 12, 2008

Nothing to “cheer” in TV sitcom on “Aliens in America”
By Ray Hanania –
It tells you how bad the situation is when Arabs and Muslims in America cheer a program that promotes the stereotype that they are “Aliens.” I’m not talking about Martians, aliens from Mars. I am talking about the more fearsome “Aliens,” the ones that come from the non-White world of fear. Apparently, the TV sitcom “Aliens in America” is the best we non-Whites can get in a post-Sept. 11 world dominated by American mainstream confusion, racism and an inability to distinguish between Arabs, Muslims, and non-Arabs.
